Population in ecosystems Flashcards
What’s population
Group of individuals living at the same habitat at the same time and are potentially able to interbreed
What’s carrying capacity
A certain size of population of a species the ecosystem can support
What’s a community
Population of different species living at the same habitat at the same time
What’s a habitat
Place where an organism normally lives
What’s a niche
How an organism fits into the environment
It describes where an organism lives and what it does there
It includes abiotic and biotic conditions to which an organism is adapted to survive
What’s intraspecfic competition
Individuals of the same species compete with each other for resources like food or water
What is interspecific competition
When individuals of diff species compete for resources
what is succession meaning
change over time in species that occupy a particular area
First few steps of succession
Pioneer species colonise the area
- this changes the environment/ abiotic factors
- environment becomes less hostile so suitable for new species with diff adaptations
Succession continued
- Environment may change in a way becomes less suitable for environemtn
-change in spices mean diversity usually increases - eventually proceeds to form a climax community
What are signs of climax community
- stable population
- same species present over a long time
