KEY DEFINITIONS Flashcards
MONOMERS
Smaller units from which larger molecules are made
Polymers
molecules made from a large number of monomers joined together.
Antigen
Protiens often foreign that stimulate an immune response
Antibodies
Proteins with specific binding sites synthesised by b cells
Genome
Complete set of genes in the cell
Proteme
the full range of proteins that a cell is able to produce.
Genetic diversity
the number of different alleles of genes in a population.
Species
Two organisms belong to the same species if they are able to produce fertile offspring
Species richness
is a measure of the number of different species in a community.
Index of diversity
describes the relationship between the number of species in a community and the number of individuals in each species.
Genotype
s the genetic constitution of an organism.
Phenotype
is the expression of this genetic constitution and its interaction with the environment.
Population
as a group of organisms of the same species occupying a particular space at a particular time that can potentially interbreed.
Totipotent cells
can divide and produce any type of body cell.
Pluripotent stem cells
can divide in unlimited numbers and can be used in treating human disorders.
unipotent cells
are found in mature mammals and can divide to form a limited number of different cell types.
