Population Growth/History of Evolution Flashcards
When do the values of r and Ro lead to positive growth, negative growth, and no growth
Ro > 1 there is positive growth r > 0
Ro < 1 there is negative growth r < 0
Ro = 1 no growth r = 0
How can we estimate initial population size?
Using the mark/recapture method with tags or the photographic mark recapture method.
Equation :
N = MC/R
Density Independent Controls
Factors affecting population size regardless of how many individuals there are.
Hurricanes, Ice Storms, Floods, Fires
Density Dependent Controls
Factors affecting population size due to the number of individuals
Predators, Pathogens, resources, wildfire(if population is the source of fire)
Catastrophism
Earth and life on it are primarily shaped by major sudden events
Gradualism
Earth and life on it are primarily shaped by long, slow processes
How could the fossil record provide evidence for catastrophism?
Sudden events cause extinction and blank spots or gaps in the fossil record. Disappearance of some lineages and appearance of new ones.
How could the fossil record provide evidence for gradualism?
You would observe gradual differences in traits over time in the fossil record without unnaturally large gaps.
What are Homologous traits?
Descent with modification produces similar traits in different organisms because they’re inherited from a common ancestor
What are analogous traits?
Similar traits in different organisms because of similar selective pressure, convergent evolution
