Population Growth and Change Flashcards
The world’s population is…
…growing rapidly
At what rate is the world’s population increasing?
Exponential
What does exponential mean?
It is growing at an increasing rate
What is birth rate?
The number of live babies born per thousand of the population per year
What is death rate?
The number of deaths per thousand of the population per year
What is natural increase?
When the birth rate is higher than the death rate, so the population grows
What is natural decrease?
When the death rate is higher than the birth rate, so the population decreases
What else is the population of a country affected by?
Migration
What is migration?
The movement of people form one area to another
How many stages are the the Demographic Transition Model?
5
Describe Stage 1 of the DTM:
- Birth rate high and fluctuating
- Death Rate high and fluctuating
- Zero population growth rate
- Population size low and steady
Describe Stage 2 of the DTM:
- Birth rate high and steady
- Death Rate rapidly falling
- Very high population growth rate
- Population size rapidly increasing
Describe Stage 3 of the DTM:
- Birth rate rapidly falling
- Death Rate slowly falling
- High population growth rate
- Population size increasing
Describe Stage 4 of the DTM:
- Birth rate low and fluctuating
- Death Rate low and fluctuating
- Zero population growth rate
- Population size high and steady
Describe Stage 5 of the DTM:
- Birth rate slowly falling
- Death Rate low and fluctuating
- Negative population growth rate
- Population size slowly falling
Why is birth rate high in Stage 1?
There’s no use of contraception and people have lots of children because many infants die
Why is death rate high in Stage 1?
Because of poor healthcare
How are healthcare and social services affected by rapid population growth?
They can’t cope, so not everybody has access to them
Why do children miss out on education because of rapid population growth?
They have to work to support their families
What are people forced to do in terms of housing due to rapid population growth?
To live in makeshift houses in overcrowded settlements, because there aren’t enough available houses
What can makeshift housing in overcrowded settlements lead to?
Health problems because the houses aren’t always connected to sewers or they don’t have access to clean water
