Q

What are the attributes of microevolution?

A
  1. ) It occurs continuously
  2. ) Depending upon the organism and the circumstance, it can dramatically transform a lineage overtime
  3. ) Conversely it is possible for a lineage to stay the same of time. This is called stasis

Q

Do we understand micro or macro evolution better?

A

Microevolution–>It can be documented with direct observation.

Q

Did Darwin outline how species actually evolved?

A

No! He assumed microevolution emerged from macroevolution.

Q

When was the distinction between micro and macroevolution developed?

A

1000 after Darwin published The Origin of the Species (which was published on November 24th, 1859), Ernest May and other developed the theory of speciation.

Q

What is speciation as opposed to microevolution?

A

Speciation is not natural selection. It is not the replacement of one allele for another (microevolution). It is the replacement of one species for another and it is caused by ecological processes.

Q

What is the basic unit of microevolutionary change?

A

Populations. Meaning populations are the smallest unit where evolutionary change is possible.

Q

Do individuals evolve?

A

No, individuals genotypes are fixed at birth. But population and species do evolve through the following mechanism:
1.) Mutations
2.) Change of frequency of allele through selection
3.) Genetic drift
etc.
