Population Genetics Flashcards
1
Q
Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium Principle
A
principle stating that a population’s genetic variation will remain constant from generation to generation if there are no outside factors that disturb it
2
Q
5 Requirements for HWE
A
- No mutations
- Random mating
- No gene flow (and no drift)
- Very large population size
- No natural selection
AKA THE ABSENCE OF ANY EVOLUTION
3
Q
Formulas
A
p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1
p + q = 1
4
Q
Non-evolving population
A
- provides a baseline to determine whether allele and genotype frequencies have changed in a pop
- describes a hypothetical situation in which allele frequencies DO NOT change from generation to generation
5
Q
Allele Distribution in Gametes
A
- the distribution of alleles among gametes reflects the distribution of alleles in the population
- gene pool = all alleles in a population
6
Q
The HWE Question
A
Do the OBSERVED genotype frequencies match the genotype frequencies PREDICTED by HWE
7
Q
What does it mean to be in HWE?
A
if a population is in HWE, then evolution is not occurring
