population genetics Flashcards

1
Q

what is the founder effect?

A

a change in gene pool that occurs when a few individuals start a new isolated population (isolating traits from the parent population)
- new population may be phenotypically and genotypical different from parents

Q

what is the bottleneck effect?

A

disasters reduce the population & gene pool
- decreases the variation in the population, and can eliminate alleles all together

Q

what is gene flow and its impact?

A

- reduces genetic differences between populations

Q

give an example of gene flow and how it can lead to increased prevalence of certain traits in a population

A
  • pollen transfer in plants
  • the movement of pollen from one flower to another to reproduce a new plant
  • the parent traits will continue to be passed down in generations, therefore increasing prevalence of those traits
