genetic concepts Flashcards
1
Q
What is genetic drift?
A
change in allele frequency due to chance events in the population
2
Q
what are examples of genetic drift in populations?
A
hurricanes, climate change, etc.
3
Q
How does genetic drift affect allele frequencies in a population (& provide an example)?
A
it may cause gene variants to disappear completely and thereby reduce genetic variation (ex. a hurricane may wipe out a huge portion of a species, therefore reducing genetic variation because theres less of that species)
