Q

Asia’s distribution

A

India and China have the responsibility for the most growth in the region (60%).

Many Asian countries have fertility rates of 1.4 or less (South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore). There is a wide range of total fertility rates up to 6.4 in Afghanistan.

Whereas China’s contraceptive use is over 90%, over 50% use contraception in other parts of Asia.

More than 50% of the world’s young people between 10-24 years old live in Asia.

Q

Latin America and Caribbean’s population distribution

A

This region has the smallest growth, due to declining fertility rate, and has the lowest average fertility rate of 2.2 (closest to developed countries).

Contraceptive use is very high. ⅔ of married women use some sort of modern contraception.
However, in Haiti, only 25% use modern contraception.

Declining fertility means the population growth in the region will be low but the population will rise to approximately 730 million by 2050.

The region is the most urbanised, with a large % living in urban areas.

There is a huge youth bulge, with a large proportion of the population concentrated in working ages.

Q

what is the Population Reference Bureau?

A

The Population Reference Bureau (PRB) mentions a demographic divide, which compares the situation in developed countries. On one side are mostly poor countries with relatively high birth rates and low life expectancies, while on the other hand, developed countries are wealthy but have birth rates so low that population decline is guaranteed.

Q

why are fertility rates falling in developed countries?

A

Fertility rates have fallen sharply in developed countries, as women delay marriage and childbearing. Smaller families are the norm, and contraceptive use is widespread.

Q

how are pro-natalist policies in France and Norway increasing population growth?

A

They have provided subsidized childcare.and generous maternal and paternal leave to help encourage larger families.
Hence, their TFR is higher than other developed countries.
