Population density and dispersion Flashcards
How to measure population density
Count all individuals.
Count individuals in random sample areas or along transects.
Convert from density of indicators (Nest, Burrows, Fecal droppings etc).
Capture, mark, recapture
Capture a set of individuals.
Mark and release them.
Wait for them to mix.
Capture a set.
The proportion of marked individuals in the second sample is approximately the same as the proportion of marked individuals in the whole population.
Demography
The study of the rates of birth, deaths, migration, and factors that cause them to vary
Life tables
Life table summarises survival and reproductive rates n different age groups
Based on single cohort
Requires long term study of population with marked individuals (birds, mammals, plants)
