population densities Flashcards
climate
many people live in temperate climates where there is enough rainfall to provide water.
- few people live in the Sahara desert as temperatures are high and rainfall is low. making farming difficult
relief
mountainous areas have low population density as there is thin/ no soil. this limits economic opportunity. they are also normally isolated so difficult to access.
- so people choose to live on flat land as its easier to build on
soil
people prefer to live in areas with fertile soil so that crops can grow and provide food
- few people live in hot desert areas as the soil dries out and turns to dust. making it difficult to grow crops or keep animals
natural resources
many people tend to live in areas where there are minerals. this creates jobs and money as they can be exported
job opertunities
jobs in different industries in urban areas incourage people to make to find work however this can lead to rural depopulation as people move to the cities
transport and communication
areas that are more accessible tend to have higher population densities
conflict
population densities are affected in Syria and Afghanistan as people are fleeing the country to avoid conflict. this can increase population density in neighbouring countries such as Turkey and Lebanon as refuge camps develop
