human causes of climate change Flashcards
carbon dioxide
produced from factories and power stations. burning fossil fuels (oil and gas) produces carbon dioxide, raising global temperatures, carbon dioxide makes up ¾ of all greenhouse gas emissions.
deforestation
increases space available for building farms and houses. trees store carbon dioxide so cutting down trees releases releases more co2 into the atmosphere.
methane
rice and cow farming produce methane. increases global temperatures. Methane is 20X stronger than carbon dioxide, meaning small amounts still have a larger impact. landfill sites also release methane when waste decomposes.
Nitrous oxide
it’s 300 times more effective in trapping heat than carbon dioxide. it stays in the atmosphere for 114 years. its produced from car exhausts and power stations, increasing greenhouse gasses and therefore temperatures.
CFCs
old fridges, air conditioning units and deodorants contain CFCs. these erode the ozone layer contributing to global warming.
