Give three problems of population growth?
A demand for housing.
Pressure on education and healthcare systems.
Countries become over crowded.
Lack of food = famine.
Why did Mao ze Dong set up the One Child Policy in 1979?
Shortages of food in China that were leading to famine were made worse by the rapidly growing population.
What was the idea of the Chinese policy?
Couples could only have one live birth (i.e. twins OK)
This would reduce population growth rates.
List 3 disadvantages of China’s One Child Policy?
Women were forced to have abortions if they had a second child.
The Chinese society prefered males to females, some girls were placed in orphanages. There was a big difference in the amount of boys to girls.
Females were killed (infanticide)
Second children got no benefits and families lost benefits they already enjoyed.
Three benefits for One Child Policy?
The population growth has slown right down- 400 million fewer babies born.
Smaller families=greater standard of living.
Families who complied got 10% wage increase and other benefits.

Improving education standards.
Treating both genders the same.
Educating people to understand the benefits of smaller families.

- couples who were only children themselves can have 2 children.
- ethnic minorities can have more than one child.
- rural farmers can apply to have a second child if the first was a girl.
