What is population?
The size and distribution of the Earth’s human population in a certain place.
What is demography?
A social science which entails the statistical study of human populations.
What does RNI (or NIR) stand for?
Rate of Natural Increase.
What is Rate of Natural Increase?
A statistic that expressed a country or region’s annual growth rate; expressed as a percentage.
What does TFR stand for?
Total Fertility Rate.
What does Total Fertility Rate mean?
A rate that expresses the fertility of a country or region; commonly understood as the average number of children a woman would give birth to during her reproductive years (ages 15-45).
What is Young and Old Populations?
The proportion of young persons (i.e., those under 15 years of age) compared to the proportion of persons over 65 years of age; graphically illustrated by population pyramids, which also reflect sex differences of the population.
What is a Population Pyramid?
The visual representation of a nation’s population representing age and gender. This gives us a quick synopsis as to what is happening to a nation’s population (i.e. is it growing, stable, or shrinking).
What is Life Expectancy?
The average number of years a person is expected to live from birth; influenced by health services, nutrition, and sanitation; used as an indicator of social development
What is the Demographic Transition?
A conceptual model that tracks changes in birth and death rates for a country or region over time
What does CBR stand for?
Crude Birth Rate.
What does CDR stand for?
Crude Death Rate.
What is Crude Birth Rate?
The number of births per 1,000 people in that country.
What is Crude Death Rate?
The number of deaths per 1,000 persons.
What does IMR stand for?
Infant Mortality Rate.
