A region whose boundaries are formally defined like districts, provinces, or countries.
What is functional region?
A region that encompasses a central point with defined boundaries and the area around it that is connected via a well-developed network of transportation and large communication systems that facilitates the movement of people, goods, and ideas.
What is vernacular region?
A region that is not defined formally but is defined by an “imaginary border.”
What is globalization?
The process of interaction and integration among people, companies, and governments worldwide.
What is cultural diffusion?
The process of spreading cultural traits from one region to another.
What are the 5 types of cultural diffusion?
Expansion diffusion, relocation diffusion, hierarchical diffusion, contagious diffusion, and stimulus diffusion.
What is expansion diffusion?
An idea that develops in a source area and remains strong there, while also spreading to other areas.
What is relocation diffusion?
An idea that migrates into new areas, leaving its origin or source of the cultural trait.
What is hierarchical diffusion?
An idea that spreads by moving from larger to smaller places.
What is contagious diffusion?
An idea that spreads based on person-to-person contact.
What is stimulus diffusion?
An idea that spreads based on its attachment to another concept.
What is the Columbian Exchange?
The widespread transfer of plants, animals, culture, human populations, technology, diseases, and ideas between the Americas, West Africa, and the Old World in the 15th and 16th centuries.
