What is Key Question 2?
How do geographers describe where things are?
What is map scale?
A ratio of the distance on a map that corresponds with the distance on the ground.
What is projection?
The method of transferring the spherical earth to a flat surface known as a map.
What are meridians?
Imaginary lines of longitude that go north to south on a map.
What is longitude?
Lines that run in a north-south direction and meet at the poles.
What are parallels?
The invisible lines of latitude that go from east to west.
What is latitude?
Lines that run in an east-west direction and plot points on the north-south axis.
What is cartography?
The science of mapmaking.
What is a map?
A two-dimensional or flat-scale model of Earth’s surface, or a portion of it.
What is absolute location?
An exact place on Earth, often given in terms of latitude and longitude.
What is relative location?
Refers to the position of a place or entity based on its location with respect to other locations.
What are mental maps?
Personal ideas of what a person thinks a map looks like from memory.
What are activity spaces?
The local areas within which people move or travel during the course of their daily activities.
What is the prime meridian?
The most important line of longitude.
What is the geographic grid?
A system of imaginary arcs drawn in a grid pattern on Earths surface. It divides Earth’s surface into latitude and longitude.
