Population and Culture Learning Goals Flashcards
A densely populated region has…
many people per square kilometer (km2)
A sparsely populated region has…
few people per square kilometer (km2)
Why are the number of births high in poor countries?
- People want large families to help out and to take care of them when they are old.
- People do not have birth control, so they are more likely to become pregnant.
- Having a big family is a sign of status (well respected).
- In some poor countries religion forbids (prohibits) the use of birth control.
How do you calculate population density?
Divide the number of inhabitants (the population) by the surface area (km2). This gives you an average.
What are some causes of population growth?
- Immigration (social population growth)
2. The number of births is higher than the number of deaths (natural population growth)
Why do people migrate?
- economical reasons (example: jobs)
- political reasons (example: war)
- ecological reasons (example: earthquakes)
- social reasons (example: marriage)
How do you calculate population growth?
Subtract the number of deaths from the number of births.
Name the three cultural elements
- Language and religion
2 Laws, family ties and education - Clothes, food, architecture and art
What is cultural diffusion?
The spreading of cultural elements to new regions
What is cultural blending?
When cultural elements change and adapt outside of their original location.
Example: Indonesian food in the Netherlands (local vegetables rather than tropical, less spicy taste)
Name some ways that cultural elements blend and diffuse?
- Mass media (Example: Bollywood films, Japanese Anime, Chinese apps such as TikTok)
- Migration (Example: learning a recipe from foreign neighbor, opening a church, synagogue, temple or mosque in a new neighborhood)
- Tourism (Examples: bringing clothes or food back from a foreign country, exposing people in another country to your language or fashions)
What is life expectancy?
How old you can expect to become! This is the average age that people die in a country or region.
What is a push factor?
A reason that people might migrate away (emigrate) from their birthplace.
Example: war, lack of jobs, chance of flooding, etc.
What is a pull factor?
A reason that people might migrate to (immigrate) a new country or region.
Example: opportunity for a better job, you have family living there, you feel safer there, there is better healthcare there, etc.
Name 5 push factors for migration.
War, famine, natural disasters (ex. earthquakes), poverty, persecution (ex. sexism, racism)
