POPULATION Flashcards
What is the Malthus theory of population growth?
That when population growth outgrows food production, a check will occur.
What is the IPAT equation and why is it highly politicised?
Impact = population x affluence x technology
Blaming population blames the poor
Blaming affluence blames the rich
What does the EKC show?
It shows that as development increases, environmental degradation will increase until the increased development allows for environmental development and less degradation.
What are 2 criticisms of the EKC?
Rich countries now export their waste and pollution, it doesn’t go away.
Doesn’t account for long term/new problems, such as plastic waste, biodiversity loss.
What is the ecological modernisation theory? What are its weaknesses?
States that damage done during development of the EKC can be reduced by using green technologies and protection laws.
Some countries lack the technology and governance for regulations.
Regulations may then just export waste to other nations.
What is the Jevons Paradox? What is the rebound effect?
A theory that states gains in efficiency result in increased consumption of a resource.
The rebound effect is the difference between the efficiency gains and the actual consumption.
What 3 conditions must be met for poor people to become activists?
They must have a historical relationship to the resource.
They must become affected by environmental degradation.
They just have a civilised society.
