NTFP Flashcards
Why are NFTPs are becoming the ‘employment of last choice/last resort’ for the poor?
3
They have features that favour poor people, such as
Low/medium returns to labour
Require low capital and skill requirements
Having open/semi-open access
Why does the dependence on NTFP’s often become a poverty trap?
3
There are limitations to their use
They have complicated market access
There are exploitative market chains
What are some common characteristics of NTFP’s and what does that mean?
3
They produce low returns
They are used to fill other income gaps or for subsistence
They have low domestication
Therefore, there is a strong correlation between NFTP and poverty
Why is it useful to distinguish between poverty rate and poverty density, and what are the implications?
Forested areas have a higher poverty rate but lower poverty density - can be used to change views, protection and policies
