DEFORESTATION Flashcards
What are the 3 types of tropical forest, which is the most deforested and why?
Rain, Dry and Cloud.
Dry* because it has the highest population density and conversion rate.
Why are tropical forest soils prone to degradation?
Low mineral and organic matter content due to fast recycling
Washed out when land is exposed due to erosion
What is the difference between deforestation and degradation?
Deforestation is the conversion of forest to other land uses.
Degradation is the loss of biological and economic productivity of a forest.
What is Terra Preta? What are its characteristics and origins?
A type of very dark, artificial fertile soil found in the Amazon basin. It was created by farming communities between 450-950bc.
What is driving deforestation in the DRC, Brazil and Indonesia?
DRC - fuel for domestic usage
Brazil - Industrial agriculture and cattle ranching
Indonesia - logging and palm oil
What are 3 underlying causes of deforestation?
Tragedy of the Commons
Excessive Consumption
Malthusian population growth
Draw the FTM.
Do it bitch
Evaluate 2 policies to reduce deforestation.
Effectiveness
Cost
Effect on inequality
Political viability
Protected areas - moderate/high effectiveness, uncertain effect on inequality, medium cost, uncertain effect and moderate viability.
Depressing agriculture prices - high effectiveness, negative costs, negative effect on inequality, very low viability.
