Polytropic Processes Flashcards
What is a Polytropic Process
A polytropic process is a thermodynamic process that obeys the relation
pV^n =constant
What are the Following Processes, and what are their polytropic indexes
Isobaric
Isochoric
Isothermal
Adiabatic
Isobaric - n=0 , constant pressure
isochoric n = infinite , constant volume process
isothermal n=1 , constant temperature
adiabatic process n = constant value not 1 or 0
Calculate the Boundary Work for an Isothermal Process.
What is an Adiabatic Process
What is the the Change in Entropy for an Adiabatic process
Process which heat doesn’t enter or exist the system
Change in Entropy = 0 , entropy stays constant
Use a graph to describe the differences between an isothermal and adiabatic process
Isothermal
Constant Temperature Process
Very Slow Process
Adiabatic
No heat enters or leaves system
Very fast Process
Calculate the Boundary Work for an Adiabatic Process
Draw and Explain the Otto Cycle
1-2 Adiabatic Compression, No Heat Transferred
2-3 Constant Volume Addition, Spark Plug Ignites fuel
3-4 Adiabatic Expansion , No Heat Transferred, Expanding gas pushes piston
4-1 Constant Volume Rejection , Exhaust Value Opens and dispenses burnt gas
