Polysomnographic Instrumentation (First Sleep School) Flashcards
What is the nervous system of brain made up of?
Neurons
3 main parts of a neuron and roles
1.Dendrite- receives
2.Cell body
3.Axon-Sends
What is a neurotransmitter?
- Chemical for transmitting nerve impulses
What is the system of communication between neurons?
Synapses
Process of a neurotransmitter
1.Axon>sends impulse
2. Neurotransmitter released
3. Crosses the synapse
4. Neurotransmitter seeks out accepting dendrite receptors
5. Change in sodium ion and potassium ion balance in the “accepting” dentrite
Nerve impulse is
Neuron goes from polarized to depolarized state
Depolarized state
-neurotransmitter knocking on dentrites
-Sodium ion- goes in
-potassium ion- goes out
(ENTIRE NEURON GETS EXCITES)
Polarized state
Neuron at rest
Sodium ion- outside
Potassium ion- inside
What is the chain reaction of a neuron
-abrupt change from polarized to depolarized
-nerve impulse moves along cell body and axon
-axon releases own neurotransmitter
What does a neuron’s process of returning to normal?
-repolarization
-Sodium goes back out
- potassium goes back in
- ready itself for next impulse
What is a biopotential ?
Movement of ion across membrane of neuron
What do we measure when collecting EEG?
Difference between polarized and depolarized states of neuron activity throughout the brain
3 parts of the brain stem
-medulla
-Pons
-midbrain
2 parts of the dienchephalon
- Thalamus
- Hypothalamus
Brainstem’s job
Relay motor and sensory between brain and spinal cord
