Polymers Flashcards
what is a polymer?
A polymer is a molecule having a very high RMM built up of smaller molecules called monomers.
what is an addition polymer?
Made by joining together thousands of the same monomer.
The monomers must have a double bond and they are joined end to end to form the polymer
characteristics of a condensation polymer
Two monomers are usually needed to form the repeat unit.
Each monomer must have two functional groups. These functional groups may be identical or different.
how is the repeat unit for a condensation polymer achieved?
- Draw the structure of the two monomers next to each other.
- The monomer with COOH will lose OH.
- The other monomer will lose H.
- Remove these groups from both ends of the monomer.
- Join the remaining parts for form the repeat unit of the polymer, ensuring that a bond is left open at each end.
Protein reaction
Protein + HCl → A mixture of Amino acids (the C-N bond of the peptide linkages are broken)
Monomer used in making starch
Glucose
How is starch formed?
H-O- X-O-H
One side closed OH and the other loses H
What are fats and oils?
Esters of glycerin and long chains
What does tranesterification reaction produce?
Biodiesels- alternative fuel made from oil from restaurants
Process of transesterification
In the process, the used oil is mixed with ethanol.
NaOH is added to the mixture which is then heated to produce the biodiesel.
The mixture is maintained at a temperature of 60 degrees for eight hours.wp
