Polymers Flashcards
What are Thermoforming polymers?
Thermoforming polymers can be heated and formed repeatedly.
What are some examples of Thermoforming polymers?
-Acrylic (PMMA)
-High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS)
-High density polyethylene (HDPE)
-Polypropylene (PP)
-Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
-Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
What are the properties and uses of Acrylic (PMMA)?
Properties: Tough, brittle and shiny.
Uses: car lights and clothing.
What are the properties and uses of high impact Polystyrene (HIPS)?
Properties: Flexible and lightweight.
Uses: Yoghurt pots and vacuum formed products.
What are the properties and uses of high density polyethylene (HDPE)?
Properties: Stiff, strong and lightweight.
Uses: Milk bottles, pipes and wheelie bins.
What are the properties and uses of Polypropylene (PP)?
Properties: Flexible, tough and lighweight.
Uses: Kitchen,rope and medical products.
What are the properties and uses of Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)?
Properties: Flexible and resistant to chemicals.
Uses: Raincoats and pipes.
What are the properties and uses of Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)?
Properties: Chemically restistant and fully recyclable.
Uses: Drinks bottles and food containers.
What are Thermosetting Polymers?
Thermosetting polymers are brittle and can only be formed once.
What are some example of Thermosetting polymers?
-Polyester resin (PR)
-Urea formaldehyde (UF)
-Epoxy resin (ER)
-Phenol formaldehyde (PF)
-Melamine formaldehyde (MF)
What are the properties and uses of polyester resin (PR)?
Properties: hard but becomes tough when mixed with glass.
Uses: encapsulating items.
What are the properties and uses of Urea Formaldehyde (UF)?
Properties: brittle and smooth finish.
Uses: electrical fittings.
What are the properties and uses of Epoxy resin (ER)?
Properties: good electrical insulator and heat resistant
Uses: electronic circuit boards.
What are the properties and uses of Phenol formaldeyphyde (PF)?
Properties: heat resistant and a good electrical insulator.
Uses: Snooker balls.
What are the properties and uses of Melamine formaldehyde (MF)?
Properties: lightweigh and brittle.
Uses: surfaces and worktops.
