Polymers Flashcards
Organic
Anything containing carbon is organic
Hydrolysis
Splitting up molecules using water
Carbohydrates
A polymer with the monomers unit called ‘monosaccharides’
Monosaccharides
Sweet tasting soluble substances with general formula (CH2O)n
Polysaccarides
polymers, formed by combining together many monosaccharide molecules.
Disaccharides
A pair of monosaccharides joined together ( via condensation reaction forming a glycosidic bond)
Biological molecules
Particular groups of chemical’s found in living organisms made from atoms
Metabolism
All the chemical processes that take place in a living organism
Macromolecules
These are polymers (long chains of monomers)
Condensation polymerisation
Turning monomers into polymers while removing H20 (a Catabolic reaction)
Catabolic reaction
Turning monomers into polymers
Why is carbon found in most forms of fundamental life?
This is due to carbon being able to form 4 bonds
What is an Isomers and name the two isomers of glucose of glucose
Isomers are molecules with the same general formula but different structure and the two are Alpha Glucose and Beta Glucose
What is the difference between the two isomers of glucose
The position of one of the Hydrogen and Hydroxide molecules are flipped
The bond found in a disaccharide
Glycosidic bond
