Polymerization Flashcards
What is polymerization?
A reaction or set of reactions in which simple molecules react with one another to form a macromolecules
What are polymerization strategies?
number of monomer species
chemical reaction
kinetics
physical arrangement of set up
What is ethylene addition?
C=C reacts with another C=C
What is esterification?
acid reacts with glycol
What is amidation?
acid reacts with an amine
What is acetylation?
reaction with acetic acid
What is step condensation/polycondensation?
small reactive bifunctional molecule reacts with another one to increase the weight of the molecule with respect to time.
What is chain polymerization/polyaddition?
C=C reacts with each other to form two single bonds and propagate the chain
What is ring opening?
Monomer is a cyclic molecules which upon reacts with other cyclic monomers
What is a homogenous arrangement?
liquid reaction medium is clear/transparent
includes bulk and solution polymerization
What is a heterogenous arrangement?
liquid medium is cloudy due to the presence of a second dispersed phase
includes suspension and emulsion polymerization
What are the characteristics of step condensation?
Successive reaction
two reagents react with one another
MW increases with time
initiators are not necessary to start the process
What are the influencing factors of step condensation?
reaction time reaction temp exothermic process catalysts are used non-equimolar addition of reagents
What are termination strategies of step condensation?
non-equimolar addition of reagents
addition of mono functional reagent
reduction of temperature
What is chain polymerization?
consists of forming a complete polymer chain by destabilizing the C=C bond of a monomer and reacting it with another double bond (C=O or C=N)
reaction takes place via addition of an initiator which causes the formation of an active center
active center is then transferred from one monomer to another
