Q

what do you do before drawing out condesnation polymers

A

Make sure that the condensation groups are located on the oppsite sides of the molecule

Q

two types of polymers…

A

addition and condensation polymers

Note : for addtion polyerms; orientate it so that the c=c bond IS IN THE MIDDLE

Q

draw the repeat structure of this

A

remember: there can be two points of condensation therefore the polymer could have two bits cut off to show that condensation has happened at two points. This is the repeat structure

Q
A

NOTE: seperate ONLY the ester linkages (eg carboxylic acid and NH2 or OH, YOU CANNOT seperate non ester linkages eg… the“NH” group in the middle

why is the NH2 group positive? BECAUSE its in an acidic environment therefore its protonated

(the NH that was originally on the benzene ring has also become protonated to NH2+ )

Q

define condensatiokn polymer

A

monomers that bond to form a polymer as well as another small molecuel eg water or hydrochloric acid

Q

formation of addition polymers

A

formed by monomers with Carbon carbon DOUBLE BONDS ,

(if you noticed that a carbon carbon double bond has abeen removed somewhere in the polymersiation process, then that suggests addition polymerisation of two moelcuels with double bonds )

video of this example… ( on how to seperate the momomers involved in the addition polymersiation of this molecule…)

9
Q

how do you go about answering polymer exam questiosn

A

ARRANGE THE POLYMERS SO THAT ITS SYMETTRICAL AND IN STRAIGHT CHAIN FORM! (MAKES IT EASIER TO DRAW OUT )(

Q

another important note…

A

draw double bonded compounds AS those criss cross structure eg..

+ dont bother wrirting out the ful COOH functional group struture

just weite “cooh” the functional group!

Explain why scientists now think that polymers such as PGA are better for the environment than hydrocarbon-based polymers.

A

photodegradeable, biodegradeable !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
