Myeloma
causes of polycythemia
PKD
HCC
Polycythemia vera JAK2 gene
COPD (tissue hypoxia)
What kind of anemia does hypothyroidism cause?
Macrocytic
Investigations for polycythemia
Ultrasound abdomen (splenomegaly/renal carcinomas)
Why might someone with polycythemia present with a TIA?
Hyperviscosity of blood and raised haematocrit
Treatment
Venesection
Aspirin therapy
Cytoreductive therapy
Why do you not give anti coag?
No indication - you give anti coag if there is a risk of clotting, but here it is more that you want to stop the platelets from clumping together over the hyperviscous blood so you give antiplatelets…
