What is primary polycythaemia?
A
Polycythaemia rubra vera - myeloproliferative disorder

What is secondary polycythaemia?
A
Polycythaemia in response to increased levels of erythropoietin - as occurs in hypoxic states
- eg. cyanotic congenital heart disease
- COPD
- living at high altitude

How do you differentiate between primary and secondary polycythaemia?
A
- JAK test (janus kinase test)
- identifies the chromosomal abnomality that is present with all polycythaemia rubra vera
