A

Polycythaemia rubra vera - myeloproliferative disorder

What is secondary polycythaemia?

A

Polycythaemia in response to increased levels of erythropoietin - as occurs in hypoxic states

  • eg. cyanotic congenital heart disease
  • COPD
  • living at high altitude

How do you differentiate between primary and secondary polycythaemia?

A
  • JAK test (janus kinase test)
  • identifies the chromosomal abnomality that is present with all polycythaemia rubra vera
