50% of people >50 have them. usually discovered incidentally. occassionally cause pain/haematuria
types of polycystic kidney disease
ADPKD (most common)
ARPKD v rare
when does ADPKD present
adult life (even though it is inherited)
ADPK due to mutation in what gene
PKD1 ( codes for polycysten)
also can be PKD2 or PKD3
presentation of ADPKD causes by kidney dysfunction
- acute loin pain
- cyst bleeds -> haematuria
- infected cyst
presentation of ADPKD due to associated idseases
- HTN (early and v common feature)
- liver cysts
- SAH due to berry aneurysm
- uraemia/anaemia associated with CKD

no rx
control BP
treat renal pain
usually require renal replacement therapy (accounts for 10% dialysis pts)
ARPKD - what age does it present
used to be called infantile PKD as presents in childhood
PKD associated with
cerebral aneurysm
mitral valve prolapse
inguinal hernia
(bc there is a problem with collagen)
