6
Q

Differences in energy consumption statistics

A
  • A report by the National Energy Administration (NEA) in 2021 showed that renewables occupy about 80% of the electricity consumption mix in three west provinces – Sichuan, Yunnan and Qinghai.
  • By contrast, renewables occupy less than 20% of electricity consumption in most eastern coastal provinces, like Shandong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang.

Q

What has been the effects of the Talatan Photovoltaic Park?

A
  • The area receives an average of 1,600 hours of sunshine per year, providing a unique advantage for the development of photovoltaic power generation.
  • Its total area is equivalent to the total land area of Singapore.
  • The power plant has created numerous job opportunities for locals and has reversed the desertification of grasslands in the area.

16
Q

How many households can China’s wind farm produce for?

A

The wind farm can meet the annual electricity consumption demands of about 2.4m households.

17
Q

Give an example of China’s wind power farm

A

The Three Gorges Yangjiang Shaba Offshore Wind Farm
- as of March 2022, produced 1b kilowatts of clean electricity
- reduced CO2 emissions by 840,000 metric tons, which is equivalent to planting 3,309 hectares of broadleaf forests.

18
Q

What are some renewable energy target/policies?

A
  • Renewable energy law
19
Q

What is the renewable energy law?

A
  • 2006
  • a framework policy which lays out the general conditions for renewable energy to become a more important energy source in China
  • It covers all modern forms of renewable energy (wind, solar, water, biomass, geothermal and ocean).
20
Q

What is the golden sun initiative?

A

A program announced by the govt in 2009 designed to promote renewable energy generation and create a domestic market for its solar cell manufacturers

21
Q

What were the aims of the golden sun initiative?

A
  • the government said it would subsidise no less than 500 megawatts worth of installations to help encourage the development of solar energy.
  • Since March 2010, close to 10 billion yuan worth of subsidies has been paid by the Chinese government under this program.
22
Q

Was the golden sun initiative effective? (yes)

A
  • encouraged many firms to invest in solar cell manufacturing
  • after the Financial Crisis in 2008, it was vital in helping smaller firms continue developing solar energy
23
Q

Was the golden sun initiative effective? (no)

A
  • many were not convinced by the subsidies provided by the scheme given that production of solar energy is not particularly lucrative.
  • Taking into account the no. of days electricity generation is not possible (e.g since the sun isn’t shining), maintenance, construction & material costs, the payback period for one solar energy project was 21 years.
  • The Golden Sun initiative shortened this to 10.5 years, but for many this still did not appeal.
24
Q

How did the govt attempt to increase the share of renewables in China’s energy mix?

A
  • China’s Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Air Pollution issued in 2013
25
Q

What is China’s view of renewable energy?

A
  • China sees renewable energy as a source of energy security, not just a method of reducing carbon emission.
  • Unlike oil, coal and gas, the supplies of which are finite and subject to geopolitical tensions, renewable energy systems can be built and used wherever there is wind, water and sun, = increasing the stability of the electricity supply.
26
Q

China’s 14th Five-Year Plan regarding renewable energy

A

aims to have 33% of electricity consumption come from renewable sources by 2025

27
Q

Praise for China’s 14th Five Year plan

A
  • As of 2021, renewable energy accounts for 29.4% of all electricity consumption = China is well on track to meet or even exceed this target.
28
Q

Criticism for China’s 14th Five year plan

A
  • However, some individuals have criticized the target as being too conservative.
  • Among all 31 provinces with government targets, only Gansu and Xinjiang in northwest China failed to meet their targets in 2021.
29
Q

What are some limitations of China’s renewable energy plans?

A
  • rate of renewables
  • approvals of renewables
  • demand for renewables
30
Q

How is the rate of renewables limiting China?

A

China’s renewables are advancing faster than electricity grids and transmission technology.

31
Q

How is the approval of renewable energy limiting China>

A

Several provinces have had to scale back approvals of renewable energy resources since they were building up too much capacity and were unable to efficiently transmit the energy to the areas that needed it.

32
Q

How is the demand for renewable energy limiting China?

A
  • Regions with some of the best potential for renewable energy generation e.g the Gobi desert, have a less the demand.
  • less capable renewable energy markets, such as Guangdong, have lots of demand
  • Transmission-line projects are not yet advance enough to transfer renewable energy to areas that need it.
33
Q

What is China’s aims in the future regarding renewable sources?

A

They will have 80% of total energy from renewable sources by 2060

34
Q

Has renewable pollution helped air pollution?

A

§ The amount of harmful particulates in the air in China fell 40% from 2013 to 2020.

35
Q

Is the Great green wall sustainable in the long run?

A

No, they are planting trees that are not native to the area (just fast growing trees). Therefore not sustainable long run
