Pollution & Greenhouse Gases Flashcards
How do fuels pollute the atmosphere?
From combustion: co2, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and soot
What does CO2 do to the atmosphere?
It cannot exit atmosphere meaning trapped radiation causing earth to heat up
What is carbon monoxide?
A toxic gas that can stop blood from carrying oxygen. Dangerous because it is odourless and colourless
What is sulphur dioxide
It causes acid rain and comes from combustion of fossil fuels
What are the greenhouse gases?
CO2, methane and water vapour
What’s greenhouse effect?
When heat is trapped in the atmosphere as an insulating layer
What human activity effects greenhouse effect.
Deforestation, burning fossil fuels, farm animals (methane) and landfill
How to reduce carbon footbprint
Renewable energy, cut waste in manufacturing, recycle, tax for landfill/ waste amounts, conservation areas (no deforestation)
