pollution Flashcards
What is pollution?
It is the addition of any such constituent to air, water or soil which deteriorates the natural quality of the environment
What are biodegradable wastes? Give an example.
Biodegradable waste are substances that can be broken down by microorganisms into harmless and non toxic substances. Ex: kitchen leftovers, leaves.
What are non biodegradable wastes? Give an example
Non biodegradable wastes are those substances which cannot be broken down by microorganisms. Ex: E-waste, glass, plastics
What is pollution?
It is the addition of any such constituent to air, water or soil which deteriorates the natural quality of the environment
What is a pollutant
It is a substance that causes pollution
What are the five major types of pollution?
Air pollution
Water pollution
Soil pollution
Noise pollution
Radiation pollution
What do you mean by the term air pollution?
It is the degradation of air quality which has a harmful effect on living organisms and certain objects.
What are the two types of Air pollution?
- Gaseous Pollution
- Particulate Pollution
What are the two sources of air pollution?
- Natural Sources: Ash from burning volcanoes, dust from storms and forest fires.
- Man-made Sources: Vehicles, industries, brick kilns and garbage.
What are the three main gaseous pollutants?
SO2, CO2, CO.
What are the pollutants released by vehicles? (3m)
- So2, CO2, CO through exhaust.
- Rubber particles through wearing of tires.
- Speeding vehicles raise road dust particles into the air.
How can we control Vehicular air pollution? [4m]
By using :
- efficient engines
- good quality of fuel
- lead free petrol
- greater use of Compress Natural Gas.
What are the pollutants released by industries?
Gaseous pollutants and the smoke released by factory chimneys contain lots of particulate pollutants
