Pollution Flashcards
Single-use plastics
plastic items which are used only once
Biodegradable
able to broken down naturally
Compost
natural process of recycling organic matter that helps soil
Hazardous waste
any material that can be harmful if it’s not properly disposed of
Renewable energy
a resource that can be replaced when needed. Eg: solar/wind power
Recycle, reuse, reduce
Reuse = find another use
Reduce = decrease plastics and etc…
Recycling = the process of collecting and changing old paper, glass, plastic, etc. so that it can be used again
Recycling bins/containers
a container for waste that will be recycled, for example, paper or glass
Oil spill
when oil is accidentally released into the environment
Waste disposal
getting rid of rubbish
Landfill
disposal of waste material by burying ir and covering it over with soil
Dumps
to get rid of something you don’t want, in a place which is not suitable
Fly-tipping
to get rid of rubbish at road, field…
Sewage
water and human waste that go down sinks, toilets and showers
Carbon footprint
the total carbon dioxide emissions produced by an individual, group or location
Contamination
the process of making something dirty or poisonous, or the state of containing unwanted or dangerous substances
Pollutants
a substance that pollutes
Fossil fuels
coal, oil, natural gas, and other fuels that are ancient remains of plants and animals
Exhaust fumes
the toxic gases given off by vehicles powered by petrol
Global warning
Climatic changes. Increase sea levels
Greenhouse emission
release of gases (CO2) into atmosphere that accelerate the heating of Earth’s atmosphere
Ozone layer
protective layer in atmosphere that shields Earth from UV radiation
Emissions
the act of sending out gas, heat, light, etc
Climate change
changes in the world’s weather, in particular the fact that it is believed to be getting warmer as a result of human activity increasing the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
Conservation/preservation
the protection of plants and animals, natural areas, and interesting and important structures and buildings, especially from the damaging effects of human activity
