anther = produces pollen (male gametes)
filament = holds up anther

- stigma = sticky to catch pollen (male gametes)
- style = holds up stigma
- ovary = contains ovules (female gametes)

describe the features of insect pollinated plants
![](https://s3.amazonaws.com/brainscape-prod/system/cm/299/645/033/q_image_thumb.png?1579616408)
- brightly coloured petals
- sweet smelling petals
- sticky or spikey pollen
- anthers/stigmas held firmly inside flowers
- sticky stigma

describe the features of wind pollinated plants
![](https://s3.amazonaws.com/brainscape-prod/system/cm/299/650/393/q_image_thumb.png?1579616366)
- small petals
- dull/brown coloured petals
- lots of pollen (it’ll be blown about)
- light pollen
- stigma/anthers are loose and dangle outside flowers
![](https://s3.amazonaws.com/brainscape-prod/system/cm/299/650/393/a_image_thumb.png?1579616377)
what happens during plant fertilisation?
- pollen lands on a stigma (icarried by insect/wind)
- pollen tube grows down the style to the ovary
- nucleus of pollen travels the pollen tube to the ovary
- nucleus of pollen joins with nucleus of ovule inside the ovary
- seed is formed
![](https://s3.amazonaws.com/brainscape-prod/system/cm/299/655/366/a_image_thumb.png?1579616880)
after fertilisation, what happens to the ovary?
ovary develops into a fruit
(ovules - female gametes - become seeds)
![](https://s3.amazonaws.com/brainscape-prod/system/cm/299/655/907/a_image_thumb.png?1579617740)
describe the structure of a seed
![](https://s3.amazonaws.com/brainscape-prod/system/cm/299/657/103/q_image_thumb.png?1579617881)
- seed coat = tough & protective
- embryo = young root/shoot that develops into a plant
- food store = starch to feed young plant until it photosynthesises to make its own food/energy
![](https://s3.amazonaws.com/brainscape-prod/system/cm/299/657/103/a_image_thumb.png?1579618050)
what happens during germination?
seed starts to grow
name 3 things a seed needs to germinate
- water = seed swells up and embryo grows
- O2 = used in respiration (creates energy for germination)
- warmth = speeds up reactions = speeds up germination
![](https://s3.amazonaws.com/brainscape-prod/system/cm/299/657/402/a_image_thumb.png?1579618352)
what is speed dispersal and how does it happen?
seeds are carried away from parent plant
- wind = seeds are light with parachutes/wings to be blown elsewhere
- animal = seeds inside fruits that animals eat and poo out elsewhere
- animal = seeds are hooked and stick to fur and dropped elsewhere
- water = seeds of plants near rivers/seas are washed up elswhere
- explosive = seeds inside fruits that burst open when ripe, throwing them elsewhere
