Pollination Flashcards
What is meant by the term compatibility
Plants which can cross pollinate with one another
What is meant by the term incompatibility
Plants that can’t cross pollinate with one another.
What is meant by the term diploid
A diploid has one set ofchromosones from male parent, and one set from the female parent. They can produce fertile ovules and pollen.
What is meant by the term triploid
They produce viable ovules but do not produce viable pollen.
Why is cross pollination and fertilisation important in top fruit?
Apples, pears, some plums and some cherries are self-infertile, and so must be cross pollinated to set fruit. It also allows new genes to be introduced.
Why are pollination groups in apples important?
groups must flower at the same time in order for them to cross pollinate and set fruit.
What is an example of a diploid cultivar?
Apple ‘Granny Smith’
What is an example of a triploid cultivar?
Apple ‘Bramley’s Seedling’
What is an example of a self-fertile cultivar?
Plum ‘Stanley’
What is a self fertile cultivar?
A plant which can pollinate itself.
State 4 methods of ensuring effecting pollination in fruit production
Cultivar selection
Planting extra pollinators such as crab apple
Shelter belts and hedges to encourage pollinators and provide windbreaks
Have pollinators within 3m of each other.
Put bee hives in the garden.
Warmer, sheltered sites provide higher temperatures at time of pollination, which allows from more effective pollination.
