how to plant
Plant 2m apart, or in field conditions they can be planted 3.3 x 1.3m apart. Plant when dormant, in October to March. Plant 5cm deeper than previously grown.

how to initially mulch
Mulch with organic matter before planting, and mulch with straw after planting.
to to prune for establishment
When planting in autumn to early spring, cut back all shoots to 2,5cm above soil level.
During the first 3 years, prune lightly in autumn or winter, removing only weak or low lying shoots. If plants are weak, prune hard by cutting half the shoots back to near ground level.
how to irrigate
Water during dry spells at ground level. Avoid heavy watering when ripening to avoid skins splitting.
how to prune for maintenace
In winter, cut out a quarter to a third of branches each year, removing old unproductive wood, weak growth and low lying branches. Make cuts low down and remove dead branches.
how to top dress
In February, feed with a high potassium general fertiliser around the base.
A high nitrogen feed can help weak plants.
how to keep weeds down
Mulch after feeding in February.
pest control
Big bud mite. Pick off infested buds and dispose of away from the plants. Dispose of heavily infested plants once fruit has been picked. Plant resistant cultivars.

Powdery mildew. Plant bushes with sufficient space for good air circulation. Cut off infected leaves and stems and burn.

After 15 years, or when it shows signs of disease.

Ripen from early summer. Cut whole fruit trusses once berries are black or pick currants individually once they ripen.
