Process by which we acquire our political values, attributes, and beliefs
Agents of Political Socialization
Family, Religion, Schools, Peers, Media, Culture, Events, and Personal Characteristics
Family
First exposure to politics; Reason why we are or aren’t political; Relationship with family is relationship you want with gov’t
Religion
Values are instilled into an individual which can affect affiliation.
Schools - 2 questions
Teachers can reaffirm or disagree with views; Pledge and songs are taught in class which make patriotism; Schools have textbooks; Schools create nationalism; More education means more voting.
Peers
Peers affect you by accepting you or not; also expect involvement
Media - 2 questions
Can support gov’t or encourage change; Media can AGENDA SET and shape how we see an issue with FRAMING. Provide entertainment/information
Events
Protests used to be more frequent before social media; Wars, Recessions and Depressions can affect socialization
Culture
Culture can support patriotic or culture can be anti establishment
