Benjamin Disraeli and Lord Salisbury wanted to appeal to working-class voters. Traditional focus on laissez-faire and individualism was insufficient to address economic and social issues

They emphasise national unity, social cohesion and the promotion of a common identity. The state has a role in promoting social harmony and protecting the interests of the nation
What do one-nation conservatives argue in terms of the economy?
Support a mixed economy: dynamic and competitive economy is essential for growth but the state is responsible in ensuring the benefits of growth are equally shared
What do one-nation conservatives argue in terms of social justice and solidarity?
Society should be organised around mutual obligation: each individual contributes to the common good according to their abilities and receives support according to their needs
How does the New Right differ from One-nation in terms of the economy?
The New Right argues for a decreased role of the state in the economy (increasing deregulation and restricting trade unions)

Traditional view of society, e.g. nuclear family, traditional sexual orientation

Prioritised to support the stability of society e.g. Thatcher harsher stop and search powers
