What are the requirements to become a member of the Ekklesia?
All male citizens over the age of 18 to attend and vote at monthly meetings.
What are the functions and duties of the Ekklesia?
- Elected magistrates
- Voted on all important matters of the state
- Met 40 times per year.
Where did the Ekklesia meet?
The Pnyx, west of the hill of the Areopagus.
What was the dikasteria (helilaea)?
It was the popular courts.
Who is legible to join the jury?
Men who are over 18 years of age who had citizenship and no debts to Athens.
How was the jury chosen?
The jury was chosen by 600 from each tribe over the age of 30 were chosen as pool of jurors.
What was the function of the jury of the Helilaea?
- Judged legal matters and archon’s decisions
- Ephialtes’ reforms: Courts determined the performance of office holders and could call magistrates to account for their terms in the office.

A building called the Helilaea in the building
What did the Strategia consist of?
10 generals, each from each tribe
How was the Strategia elected?
Ekklesia. They could be re-elected any number of times.
What were the functions and duties of the Strategia?
Served as military commanders.
Responsible for the recruitment to the army.

Stertegeoin near the Agora.
How were the Archons elected?
Elected by citizens but eligibility was limited to membership of the top two property classes.
What was the role of the Archons?
Wide power, because they were members of the council of the Areopagus.

Office at the Royal Stoa
What was the Areopagus?
Made up of ex-archons elected for life.
What were the duties of the Areopagus?
- Held executive power in legal and constitutional affairs.
- Adjudicated arson and homocide cases.
Where did the Areopagus meet?
The hill of the Areopagus.
