An independent city-state.
Flaceliere : Polis “a community of citizens, wholly independent, with sovereign power over the individual citizens who compose it, bound by cults and regulated laws.”
How big is Attica?
According to Webster, Attica was a peninsula about 50 miles long and 50 miles wide.
Where was Athens close to?
Athens was on the west coast of the Aegian sea.
Describe the effects of mountainous Athens
As Athens is very mountainous:
- Athens had few areas that are arable
- The soil is not very fertile.
- Trade is heavily depended on
Name and describe the three major resources listed by Xenophon.
1) Silver: Mt Laurium mines.

3) Marble- Mt Pentelicus. Build temples.
4) Olives- Grow mostly. Olive oil- bread, food sources.
What does the nature of resources reveal?
Resources are dug. Poor, infertile land. Rich in underground resources. Heavily dependent on trade.
Why was land suited for olive trees?
It was rocky, dry and well suited for olive trees.
What are the significance of trade?
- Produces jobs for economy.
- Provide exports which provide income. Sustainable.
- Very limited natural resources: too dependent on trade.
What was the Acropolis?
- The stronghold of the community.
- Elevated, easily defended part of town.
- Highest point of polis.
- Major feature of the polis of Athens.

Where all people of Athens voted. Located in Pynx.

Court of the Elders in the city.
