Polioencephalomalacia PEM Flashcards
What are the 2 dietary risks?
Reduced thiamine absorption in response to high thiaminase activity in the reticulo-rumen
High sulphide/sulphate intake leading to production of hydrogen sulphide in the reticulo-rumen
What dot eh 2 conditions cause in the body?
result in reduced ATP production due to inhibition og the TCA cycleand ETC due to low levels of thiamine or high levels of sulphide
What do animals with subacute cases do?
Separate from the group, stop eating, display twitches of ears/face, head held in elevated position, cortical blindness with absence of menace response with normal papillary light reflex and followed by recovery with only a few minor neurologic impairments
What do animals with acute cases do?
Blindness followed by recumbency, tonic/clonic seizures and coma usually poor response to therapy and high mortality
