Minerals L3 Flashcards
What minerals are in dolomitic limestone?
Calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate
Whats in agricultural lime?
Calcium carbonate and a good quality lime has 37-40% calcium
Whats in dolomite?
calcium carbonate (22%) and magnesium carbonate (12%)
How much magnesium is in a good quality crushed magnesium carbonate rock?
37-40%
What is in Causmag?
magnesium carboante
What is Causmag good for preventing?
hypomagnesemia (grass tetany)
What pastures is hypomagnesemia seen in?
phase 1 and 2 pastures that are high in potassium and true protein
Whats in epsom salts?
20% Mg and 27% sulphur in a highly soluble/available form
What happens when epsom salts are fed in excess?
In bovids rumen bacteria can convert the sulphur to hydrogen sulphide which is absorbed into the blood and is toxic to the ETC resulting in the inhibition of production of ATP
What is in sea salt?
Sodium (39%) chloride (61%)
Where can you get sources of P
Anhydrous DCP, Anhydrous MCP
These contain P and Ca
Whats more toxic organic or inorganic forms of minerals?
inorganic forms are more toxic
What are the advantages of ionophores?
Shift ruminal fermentation patterns to produce less acetate and more propionate
Bacteriostatic inhibit bacterias ability to reproduce (strep bovis)
Improve feed conversion efficiency and liveweight gain
Reduce incidence of lactic acidosis, liver abscesses, prevent bloat, overgrowth of eimeria
What are some examples of antimicrobials/ionophores?
Sodium monensin (rumensin), Lasalocid (Bovatec and Avatec), Virginiamycin (Eskalin)
What does Bamermycin/flavophospholipol (Gainpro, Flaveco) do?
is a phosphoglycolipid witha ntimicrobial acitivity against gram-neg baccteria (inhibits cell wall synthesis)
