Police values Flashcards
What is integrity?
Integrity is the consistent ability to balance competing principles and thereafter deliver a service that is relevant both to the citizen and policing, which builds trust and is worthy of support from both those who are affected by the particular decisions and those who are not
This requires you to think about your options before acting, ensuring any decisions you make withstand scrutiny and reflect the values of the organisation
Why is integrity important?
When we have integrity, we trust our colleague and leaders. We’re dependable, and , when we hold ourselves accountable for our actions, we become role models for others to follow. This impacts our success in life
What is fairness?
Fairness is the quality of treating people equally or in a way that is right or reasonable
Fairness means that you are impartial and just treatment or behaviour without favouritism or discrimination
Why is fairness important
In a community where people are treated fair everyone works together, solves problem easily, has fun and cares for one another, feels safe and gets along
We must show impartiality throughout all our dealings with the public, colleagues and partners. This is achieved by being unprejudiced, fair and objective. We consider different sides of a situation and ensure that each side is given equal consideration
What is respect
Taking pride in delivering; consistently demonstrating the ability to be considerate and appreciate the needs of others while acting politely and professionally
This respect should be based on the pride we have for the job we do, being proud of the organisation we represent
Why is respect important
Respect is important as it helps create a fair environment
A respectful atmosphere prevents favouritism, giving everyone equal opportunities to voice their ideas
What is human rights
Policing means protecting human rights, and the first duty of a police officer is to uphold human rights and afford respect to all people
The principles of human rights are equality, non discrimination and human dignity
If we offer human rights to all people we will be upholding the values of service
Why is human rights important
They are important as they are a means of protection for us all, especially those who may face abuse, neglect and isolation
Most importantly, these rights give us power and enable us to speak up to challenge poor treatment from a public authority
