Q

how does police work with government

A

The police are funded by the government - or more precisely from the Home Office and in turn the Ministry of Justice. The MoJ gets the money it spends on public services from taxes. The police also get funding from local government through money raised by council tax.

The government are responsible for creating laws and policies, they therefore determine what the police are required to enforce, what powers they have and what procedures/rules they must follow.

The Home Office regulate/oversee the police force and often create new strategies and initiatives to improve policing and increase public safety such as the PREVENT programme.

Q

courts

A

The police will work with the courts to ensure that defendants, in police custody, are brought before them.

In order for the police to acquire certain powers they must make an application to the Magistrates courts. A Magistrate will review the application and decide whether it is appropriate to grant certain powers by issuing warrants such as a search warrant or even an arrest warrant.

It is fairly common for members of the police involved in the investigation to be called to court to provide testimonial evidence. This can be in both the Magistrates’ court and the Crown Court.

Magistrates may set bail conditions that require police involvement, e.g. reporting regularly to a police station or surrendering your passport to the police

Victim support also supports witnesses and victims via the Witness Care units (WCUs) who have made evidential statements and who may be called by the prosecution to give evidence at a court hearing in England and Wales.

They liaise between the witness, police, courts and the CPS. It is the main provider of court and prosecution based information for the victims once the case enters the CJS.

Crimestoppers: Independent charity that gives people the power to speak up and stop crime. They encourage crime reporting as they are 100% anonymous.
They work alongside the police on many schemes such as their youth service “Fearless” which delivers social media campaigns targeting young people via social media platforms and aims to educate them about rising awareness of the choices and consequences associated with criminality.

The Howard League for Penal Reform: campaign to reduce the criminalisation of children by working closely with police forces in England and Wales. This resulted in the number of child arrests falling by 58% between 2010 and 2015.
