2
Q

What causes an atom to have a greater ability to distort the electron could.

A

Smaller atoms with a greater nuclear charger have a greater power of attraction and can therefore distort the electron cloud to a greater degree.

Q

What causes a permanent dipole and give an example.

A

Water has a permanent dipole because the distribution of the electron cloud is unsymmetrical.

6
Q

How can you test the polarity of a liquid.

A

Place a liquid in a burette and let it run through the burette. Place a charged rod next to the burette.
Polar liquids will be attracted or repelled by the electrostatic attraction while non-polar molecules will be unaffected and will continue to run through the burette.
