Polar Covalent Bonding And Molecular Shape Flashcards
What is a polar bond?
A polar bond is a type of covalent bond where one atom pulls the shared electrons closer to itself.
How do you determine whether a covalent bond is polar or non polar?
If the difference between the electro negativity is more then 1.7 then it is an ionic bond, if it’s between 1.7 and 0.5 then the bond is polar covalent, if it’s between 0.1 and 0.4 it’s non polar covalent, and if it’s 0 then it’s pure covalent. Also it HAS to be asymmetrical to be a polar bond.
For a linear shape, how many total bonds, shared bonds and lone pairs?
2 total bonds, both shared
For a trigonal planar shape, how many total bonds, shared bonds and lone pairs?
3 total bonds, all shared
For a bent shape, how many total bonds, shared bonds and lone pairs?
3 total bonds, 2 shared, 1 lone pair
Or 2 lone pairs
For a tetrahedral shape, how many total bonds, shared bonds and lone pairs?
4 total bonds, all shared
For a trigonal pyramidal shape, how many total bonds, shared bonds and lone pairs?
4 total bond, 3 shared bonds, 1 lone pair
What is a dipole moment?
A dipole moment is just the moment where the 2 atoms are attracting due to the negative and positive charges between them
