Ionic Bonds And Covalent Compounds Flashcards
Characteristics of an ionic bond
Higher boiling points
Solid, crystal like
Soluble in water
Less flammable
Conductive in water
What are cations and anions?
Cations are positive ions and anions are negative ions
What is the naming rule for ionic compounds?
Name the metal first and then change the non metal to -ide
What is a covalent compound vs ionic compound?
Covalent compounds are 2 non metals bond and ionic compounds are a metal and non metal bond
Characteristics of a covalent bond
Lower melting and boiling points
Solid, liquid, gas
Less soluble
More flammable
Not Conductive
What is the octet rule?
The octet rule states that atoms tend to bond in a way so that they have 8 electrons in their valentine shell
What is combining capacity?
Combining capacity is the number of covalent bonds that a non metal atom will usually make to form a stable molecule.
How do you name covalent compounds?
The first atom starts with mono, di, tri, etc, and the second atom is changed to -ide (also add mono, di, tri, etc).
What are diatomics?
Diatomics are elements that can only exist as two atoms of the element, they cannot exist as single atoms. Remember the term HOFBrINCL.
