Intermolecular Forces Flashcards
What do intramolecular forces do?
They hold atoms together within a molecule. Such bonds determine chemical properties of a compound.
What is a molecule?
A group of 2 or more atoms, chemically bonded together.
What do intermolecular forces do?
Intermolecular forces exist between molecules, and influence physical properties.
What is the London dispersion attraction?
This is an intramolecular force. This is the weakest one of the 4. This force of attraction is caused by the random creation of temporary dipoles within molecules.
What is the dipole dipole attraction?
This is an intermolecular force. This is stronger than the London dispersion force. This occurs between molecules with permanent dipoles.
What is the hydrogen bond?
This is an intermolecular force. This is a stronger version of the dipole dipole attraction. This only occurs between hydrogen bonded with nitrogen, oxygen, or fluorine.
