Memel, which was predominantly German.
Why did Hitler want Poland?
Poland was in the way of Lebensraum. He wasn’t popular with the loss of Danzig and the creation of the Polish Corridor in the treaty of Versailles. Hitler had no need of a neutral Poland now he had Czechoslovakia.
Why would Stalin want to ally with Britain and France?
Germany would probably not feel able to attack Poland, and he had an ill armed army due to his paranoia and the murder of most officers. Also Russia was Germany’s ultimate target.
Why did Britain not ally with Stalin?
He was a communist.
When was the Nazi-Soviet pact signed?
23rd August 1939.
Why was this alliance cynical?
It bought them time and benefitted them in the short term, as Hitler knew he could invade Poland and Russia had time to build up his forces.
Why didn’t Russia sign a pact with Britain?
Stalin was insulted by Britain’s slowness to negotiate and didn’t trust them.
